Dad 'left with nothing' after bank account went £1million overdrawn

A dad-of-two says he can't afford to feed his family after discovering his bank accounts were £1 million overdrawn.

Darren Edwards claims he has been 'left in the dark' by Barclays banks since waking up to the shocking discovery a month ago. The 41-year-old from Burnley said he first notice an issue with his account after his card was declined four times at a McDonald's drive-thru on April 25.

When checking his bank balance, Darren discovered both of his accounts were £500,000 overdrawn. Now, he is unable to pay for his bills and says he has 'nothing left', the Mirror reports.

He added: "I can't even afford to feed my family anymore. My friends and family have been helping me out, but that is also taking a toll on them as they have their own bills."

Darren believes his account could have been hacked or there could have been a transaction error. He said he usually saves around £3,000 in various bank accounts to go towards monthly bills, living expenses, and a summer holiday fund.

"I’ve tried ringing the bank but the woman couldn’t tell me anything," he added. "No one would explain what was happening."

"I went to the bank and was in there for some time but they said the same. We had plans to take the kids away to Blackpool over the weekend but we couldn’t do that."

Darren also explained how the family had also been saving up for a holiday to America in July. He said: "We can’t do that anymore. Everything is just up in the air at the minute.

"It’s a shock that everything’s gone. It ruined the bank holiday for the family and put a strain on everything else."

A spokesperson for Barclays said they are "complying with its legal and regulatory obligations" and are "unable to share any further information."
