A young father who was killed in a road crash while on a mercy mission to visit a seriously ill brother will be laid to rest on Thursday.
Mark McDaid had driven almost 300km to visit his sibling when he was killed in the horror smash early on Sunday morning.
His brother was in hospital in Galway after he received serious injuries while working on a boat in Rossaveal harbour on Monday and Mr McDaid and other family members had been mounting a bedside vigil for several days.
He was staying overnight at a property in the Cummer, near Tuam when he went for a walk at around 12.30am – and was then struck by the car.
Mr McDaid, who was from the Carndonagh area of north Donegal and had only married his fiancée in July, was critically injured at the scene and was rushed to University Hospital Galway, where medics were treating his seriously ill brother.
But tragically Mr McDaid, who was in his 40s and had a number of children, later lost his fight for life.
A notice released by his loved ones stated: “The death has taken place of Mark McDaid (Ned); Cherry Avenue, Carndonagh.
“Mark will repose at his Mum and Dad’s home, Neshie and Bernie Ned at Templemoyle in Culdaff.
“You may pay your respects on Wednesday from 11am to 10pm.
“Mark’s Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday at 11am in St Patrick’s Church, Aughaclay, Malin.
“Burial is in St Mary’s Cemetery, Lagg, Malin. Family time on the morning of the funeral please.
“Family flowers only please. Donations if desired to the University Hospital Galway.”
Sources said Mr McDaid was a lorry driver and well-known in the Carndonagh and Culdaff areas of Donegal.
“Everyone is very shocked and very upset.
“They are a very popular family in the area. It is a real tragedy."
Gardai in Co Galway are appealing for witnesses to the accident.
