Dad killed as Tesla 'on autopilot' smashes into back of his Harley Davidson

Authorities are investigating another crash linked to Tesla's autopilot software after a motorcyclist was tragically killed.

Dashawn Holland, 34, died on Saturday, July 23 when a 2020 Tesla Model 3 hit the back of his bike in Draper, Utah.

This is the 38th time the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) has opened an investigation into self-driving vehicles. There have been 19 deaths in investigations relating to Tesla.

Reports indicate the driver of the car not to have seen Holland and is suspected to have had the autopilot setting on, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Holland, a single dad, died from his injuries after he was flung from his Harley Davidson.

It comes after another motorcyclist was killed in California on July 7 when a 2021 Tesla Model Y crashed.

Only two days later a Florida rest stop was the scene of a Tesla crashing into the back of a Walmart truck where a female driver, 66, and a male, 67, were both killed.

Tesla does warn that drivers using the autopilot software should keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times so they can retake control of the vehicle quickly.

The Mirror has contacted Tesla for comment.

For the fourth quarter of 2021, the company say they "recorded one crash for every 4.31 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology."

They added: "By comparison, NHTSA’s most recent data shows that in the United States there is an automobile crash every 484,000 miles."
