An update to travel advice to anyone from the UK visiting Cyprus has been issued. The UK Foreign Office made the alert which relates to safety and security for travellers.
A popular tourist destination, around one million British nationals visit Cyprus every year as holidaymakers enjoy the sights, beaches and local hospitality of the region. While most visits are trouble-free, the Foreign Office has reminded visitors that the authorities in north Cyprus do not share information regarding British nationals in distress.
This has prompted new information to be shared on the political situation, with additional information in the update about child abduction in northern Cyprus. The UK Foreign Office update, which was shared by Nottinghamshire Live sister publication Liverpool Echo, said: "The authorities in north Cyprus do not share information regarding British nationals in distress with the British High Commission, or the families affected.

"Even when the High Commission is aware of a British national in distress, the authorities in the north will not share information about their location, wellbeing or treatment." It went on: "British nationals travelling to the north of Cyprus are more vulnerable and at greater risk."
The Republic of Cyprus is a full member of the EU, but the country remains divided by the Green Line. The self-declared ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ is not recognised by the British Government.
Additionally, the authorities in north Cyprus do not act on British instruments of court and will not share information with the British High Commission on minors who are subject to UK court orders. This means the UK Foreign Office is unable to ensure that these minors are properly safeguarded.
The Government advises that visitors to the country should check the ‘entry requirements’ section for Cyprus’s current entry restrictions and requirements before they travel. It adds: "If you plan to pass through another country on your journey, check the travel advice for the country you’re transiting."
