Cyclist taken to hospital with multiple injuries after being knocked down by truck in Walker

A cyclist was taken to hospital with multiple injuries after being hit by a truck in Newcastle.

Emergency crews attended the scene in the Stotts Road area of Walker following reports that a cyclist had been knocked down just after 3.20pm on Friday. The Fossway in Walker was subsequently closed by officers from Northumbria Police at the junction of Stotts Road.

An air ambulance from the Great North Air Ambulance landed at the scene to provide assistance. The injured cyclist was taken by road to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for further medical assistance.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said at the time: “At 3.20pm today (Friday) we received a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a cyclist in the Stotts Road area of Walker, Newcastle. Emergency services are at the scene.”

Two fire engines were at the scene to assist with the rescue of the cyclist. A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 3.36pn following reports of a road traffic collision on Stotts Road in Walker.

"We attended the scene at 3.29pm, one appliance from Wallsend and another from Byker were in attendance.

"An air ambulance arrived at 3.54pm. The casualty was left with multiple injuries but they were not found to be life-threatening. The casualty was taken to the RVI via ambulance.

"The air ambulance wasn't used. We left the scene at 4.18pm."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We received a call at 3.20pm to reports of a road traffic collision off Waverdale Avenue, Newcastle, involving a cyclist and a truck. We dispatched one ambulance crew and two specialist paramedics, and took one patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."
