Cyclist killed in A5 crash despite efforts of off-duty nurse and local police officer

A cyclist has died following a collision with a car in North Wales.

The incident happened on the A5, entering Llidiart-y-Parc, towards Llangollen, at around 5.30pm on Monday (January 31), and closed the road for around seven hours as emergency services - including the Wales Air Ambulance - worked at the scene.

A local off-duty nurse and police officer both tried to save the male cyclist, who was not local to the area, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, North Wales Live reports.

North Wales Police are now appealing for witnesses to the collision.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses and information after a cyclist died following a road traffic collision near Corwen yesterday evening (Monday, 31 st January).

"Shortly after 5:30pm North Wales Police received a report of a collision involving a pedal cycle and a dark coloured Mitsubishi Shogun on the A5 just before the 40mph sign entering Llidiart-y-Parc towards Llangollen.

"Despite best efforts of a local off-duty nurse and a local police officer that arrived at the scene within minutes the male pedal cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene."

Sgt Raymond Williams of North Wales Police added:“We would like to offer our profound sympathies with the man’s family and friends.

“Our investigation is underway, and I would like to thank all those who have contacted us so far.

"However, we continue to appeal to anybody who may have been travelling along the A5 around the time of the collision, and who may have dash cam footage to contact us.

"I believe the cyclist had left Corwen and cycled along the A5 towards the location of the collision.”

Anybody with information that could assist with the ongoing investigation is urged to contact officers at the Roads Policing Unit via the website or by calling 101, quoting reference number 22000075053.
