Cyclist in 'serious condition' after being hit by truck in Galway as gardai appeal for witnesses

A cyclist remains in hospital today in ‘serious condition’ as gardai appeal for witnesses to a horror crash in Galway on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at around 6:00 pm when a cyclist collided with an articulated lorry at the Skerritt Roundabout on Old Dublin Road in Renmore.

The cyclist, a man in his mid-30s, was rushed from the scene by Ambulance to University Hospital Galway for treatment of serious injuries.

A technical examination of the scene was carried out by investigators last night with local diversions in place for motorists.

Officers are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.

They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have camera footage (including motorists with dash cam) from the vicinity of the Skerritt roundabout at the time of the collision, to make it available to them.

A garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí in Galway are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision in Renmore, Galway on Tuesday 17th January 2023.

“Shortly before 6:00 pm, Gardaí and Emergency Services were alerted to a collision involving a cyclist and an articulated lorry at the Skerritt Roundabout on the Old Dublin Road in Renmore.

“The cyclist, a man in his mid-30s, was taken from the scene by Ambulance to University Hospital Galway, where his condition is understood to be serious.

“A technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators is underway, the road is currently closed and traffic diversions are in place.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.

“They are also appealing to those with camera footage (including motorists with dash cam) from the vicinity of Skerritt roundabout at the time of the collision, to make it available to them”.
