Cutback in magistrates’ legal advice ‘to hit justice’

Fears are mounting about wrongful convictions in London’s Covid courts after plans emerged to fast-track more prosecutions through the system while cutting back on legal scrutiny.

A magistrate in the single justice procedure currently sits with their own legally trained adviser as they handle dozens of prosecutions each day. Under new Ministry of Justice plans, three single justice procedure magistrates will have to share access to a single adviser — over the phone or on MS Teams — as the Government seeks to further streamline the court system.
