Residents have told of their surprise after firefighters battled a blaze at their local Chinese takeaway. Nottinghamshire crews tackled the fire at New Yeung Chow on Orford Avenue, Clifton, today (December 5).
Emergency services were called to the scene of the business at 3.05pm and found a fire located in a deep fat fryer in the kitchen. Crews from London Road and West Bridgford were in attendance.
The firefighters used two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.

Residents in Clifton said they "felt bad" for the New Yeung Chow owners. Dez Malcolmson had caught the bus to visit the Chinese takeaway - but found that it was closed.
The 80-year-old said: “I came here to pick up a menu and they’re closed. I just got the bus down here. I was wondering why they were closed. They’re always normally open.”
Krishan Kiruba, who works at the Premier store neighbouring the takeaway, shared sympathy for the takeaway owners. The 33-year-old said: “I saw the smoke outside, it wasn’t that bad. It came under control after about 30 minutes.
“I feel bad for them - I hope they’re fully insured. It will take a week for them to get back - this is the only Chinese restaurant around here.”
Paramedics were also called to the scene. Officials said a man was being treated for smoke inhalation.
Nearby resident Phoebe Audas, a college student, saw the scene on Orford Avenue. The 17-year-old said: “We just saw people gather out there and the fire trucks. It was at the Chinese restaurant. It was an awful smell.”
A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "This incident involved a deep fat fryer within a building. Crews used two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire."
