Curtis Main is adamant he won’t let his Buddies start dusting off their passports for a European adventure next season just yet.
And the St Mirren striker insists nothing has been achieved with seven games still to go as Stephen Robinson’s men jet into the business end of the Premiership season.
The Saints are currently sitting pretty in fifth spot, just three points behind Aberdeen in third and four points ahead of Hibs in sixth.
Last season a fifth-placed finish saw Motherwell qualify for the second round of the Europa Conference League.
While a strong end to the season could see the Paisley club back in European action for the first time since featuring in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup back in 1987, Main refused to get too far ahead of himself with seven games still to play.
That run starts with a difficult trip to Ibrox this Saturday as St Mirren look to initially secure a first top-six finish since 1985 with just two games remaining until the split.
When asked about the prospect of qualifying for Europe next season, Main told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “I wouldn’t get ahead of myself just yet.
“There’s still a lot of football to be played and initially we need to try to cement our top-six place. Then after that we can maybe look further along the line.
“We’ve had some good performances and we’ve managed to take points, so we’ll now reset and we’ll plan for Saturday.
“Obviously it’s a tough game to go and get something from.
“But with the confidence that’s running through the dressing room just now, that’s hopefully something we can go and do.
“We can’t get too carried away. We’ve got two massive games, starting with going to Ibrox and there is still six points up for grabs.
“We can’t think anything’s done yet.”
Main scored his first goal in nine games against Hearts last weekend, his seventh of the campaign in which he’s become one of the first names on boss Robinson’s team-sheet.
The 30-year-old forward feels the belief and trust the Saints manager has in him has been key to his impressive performances up front, having first partnered Jonah Ayunga and more recently Tony Watt.
Main said: “I’m obviously taking confidence from playing every week and I know the manager trusts me. That’s why I play.
“He knows what he gets week in, week out, whether that’s putting the ball in the back of the net or everything else that comes with my game.
“So, I feel in good form. Everyone does and there’s a real belief in the squad. Everyone is pushing each other on.”
