Currys are introducing autism friendly shopping hours across their Dublin stores this week.
The retailer confirmed that the shop would have designated autism friendly shopping in effect each Thursday from 4pm onwards. Shoppers can access ear defenders during these hours, while non verbal customers can use booklets to help make their shopping experience run more smoothly.
Additionally, screen displays will be darkened during the two hour period. The autism friendly hours will be introduced in stores such as Jervis, Liffey Valley, Blanchardstown, Swords Airside, and Carrickmines. There are 16 Currys stores nationwide, all of which will implement the new policy.

A Currys spokesman said: “We know that public spaces with loud music and bright lights can be stressful for those with autism and so the purpose of these evenings is to support our customers by providing a calmer environment, as well as letting them know that additional assistance is available if necessary .”
Currys is one of several Irish retailers to introduce sensory friendly shopping periods. Many Supervalu stores offer autism friendly shopping each Tuesday from 7pm-9pm. The lights in the shop are typically dimmed during these periods and loud music is switched off.
The tech superstore has partnered with My Canine Companion to facilitate the new hours. The charity provides service dogs to children and families living with autism. Customers will have the option of donating 50 cents to the charity while completing a card or contactless transaction.
The retailer's staff have all undergone autism training to ensure that the shopping hours are sensitive to those with unique or additional needs. The training, which was carried out by the Willow Tree Autism Project, was given to both floor staff and head office management.
