Currys giving shoppers £5 voucher in exchange for old, broken, or unused tech

Currys is bringing back its 'Cash for Trash' campaign to help Brits get rid of unwanted tech. Old, broken or unwanted items can be taken to store and exchanged for a £5 voucher off another piece of kit.

Cash for Trash first ran during March. It saw Currys collecting 267 tonnes of unwanted tech electricals.

The retailer has also unveiled 'walls of waste' full of broken tech in London, Leeds and Manchester. Passers-by can help themselves to a piece and take it to a Currys store in exchange for a voucher.

According to Currys, strapped for cash Brits are currently sitting on a stockpile of an estimated 527 million unwanted electrical items including old clocks, broken kettles and laptops that need an upgrade. The most hoarded pieces of old tech in the UK are said to be mobile phones (54%), cameras (49%), speakers and headphones (40%).

Dean Kramer, director of services at Currys, said: “Currys exists to help everyone enjoy amazing technology, and part of that is making it as accessible and affordable as possible. This is why we launched our Summer Inflation Busters last month, in a bid to help Brits beat the squeeze when they’re in need of essential tech.

“We also want to ensure that we are supporting our customers when their tech reaches the end of its life or is no longer needed, making recycling both easy and rewarding. Along with Price Lock and 12 Month Pay Delay, we’ve relaunched Cash for Trash to help consumers’ wallets and the planet too.

“We will be unveiling our Cash for Trash walls across London, Leeds and Manchester; highlighting how customers really can hand-in any old, broken, or unused technology at a Currys store and get a monetary reward of at least £5 or more.”

Cash for Trash walls of waste are situated in London (Westfield Shepherd’s Bush), Leeds, (Sidney St) and Manchester (Spinningfields Square), from today (Monday, August 8) until Wednesday.

Cash for Trash is now running in Currys stores, find your local store here.
