Well, it's official. Rumors of the Chevrolet Camaro's demise stretch back years, but now the rumors are confirmed. Production of the sixth-generation Camaro ends with the 2024 model year, and there isn't anything replacing it. Yet, anyway.
The news comes straight from a Chevrolet press release announcing the final plans for Camaro, which include Collector's Edition models that will be revealed at a later date. 2024 models will be available later this year, but once the assembly line stops in January 2024, the history books will close once again on Chevy's enduring war horse.
However, it appears the book won't stay closed forever. In the press release, Chevrolet Global Vice President Scott Bell promises it's not the end of the road for Camaro. Unfortunately, the automaker doesn't have any information regarding a potential successor at this time.
"As we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee, and race fan," said Bell. "While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story."
As previously mentioned, Chevrolet will at least offer a special model to bring this era to a close. It's not a 1,025-horsepower street-legal drag racing monster like the Challenger Demon 170, but there are plans for a Collector's Edition package offered on RS and SS models. It will also be available in limited numbers for the range-topping Camaro ZL1. It's unclear if this will include any performance upgrades, but Chevrolet does offer teaser images to preview the Camaro's last new suit.
As for the as-yet unconfirmed future, rumors have suggested everything from a new Camaro SUV not unlike the Mustang Mach-E, to an electric sedan. Recently, rumors surfaced that General Motors could spin off the Camaro and Escalade as sub-brands under Chevrolet and Cadillac, offering a range of models. Whether Camaro comes back as a sporty SUV or an entire brand, it will almost certainly be electrified with either hybrid or fully electric powertrains.
