How the new LoL ranked system works

Starting in 2025 and continuing through 2026, Riot replaced the old single-season structure with:

  • 3 ranked seasons per year.
  • 2 Acts per season.
  • Smaller ranked resets between seasons.
  • Separate battle pass style progression tracks for each Act.

This means players now see ranked progression updates and resets more frequently throughout the year instead of waiting for November.

Every League player who participated in ranked queues across the season will be rewarded for their efforts with various skins and other cosmetics at the end of each competitive season, which typically runs across a calendar year. Since 2025, though, the structure of a season was refreshed, with each divided into three Acts.

These rewards include everything from loading screen borders that last the duration of the next season to other reminders of how highly (or lowly, in some cases) you placed, like icons. You also get Victorious skins by collecting tokens for placements (previously for reaching Gold). Rewards are distributed based on the highest rank you achieved through the season, so don’t feel scared to fall a little to learn more lessons in your competitive League climb.

Finally, your League rank will obviously also reset at the end of every year.

This year, you can get your hands on multiple rewards over the season, rather than one reward at the end. Split points are awarded over each season, along with an emote for act one of season 15, a ward skin for act two, and a Victorious skin chroma for act three.

Seasons were completely overhauled in 2025. Most importantly, each year will have three seasons instead of just one, each divided into two acts. Each season will have a theme that will influence most of the events in the League at a specific time.

“Now we want to take that immersion further with our new seasons… Each [season] is going to be around eight patches long, where we’re going to follow champions around different regions of Runeterra. Each one is going to have its own theme, but we’re going to have an overarching narrative that connects them throughout 2025. And each season’s theme will be the anchor for most of the content going into the game as well,” Riot explained.

If you’re a fan of events like the Lunar New Year, don’t worry—they’re not going anywhere. But a new landing page, quests, battle pass, and more will be focused on the current season.
