NEW DELHI: Even as fresh cases continue to fall steeply, there has been a curious surge in Covid tests in the country, as per Union health ministry figures. In the second half of November, while the seven-day average of daily cases dropped to less than half, the average number of daily tests more than doubled.
The sudden rise in testing is puzzling as it’s a reversal of the usual trend of a drop in testing in sync with a decline in cases. What is also not clear is where the increase in numbers was coming from as TOI cross-checked testing figures in several states and found no rise there. Officials said the increase could be because of a rise in other infections or due to a technical glitch.
