Curfew continued for the second consecutive day on Sunday in Rajasthan’s Karauli town, where communal violence broke out with an alleged stone-pelting by unidentified persons on a motorcycle rally on Saturday. Police have so far detained 36 persons in connection with the violence.
Mobile internet service was suspended in the city, situated 170 km away from Jaipur, to check the spread of rumours. A special investigation team of the police has been constituted to probe into the sequence of events, while another police team was conducting assessment of the damage to properties, including a large number of shops.
Of the 35 injured persons, nine have been admitted to the Karauli district hospital and one, with serious injuries, was referred to Jaipur on Saturday night. About 600 policemen have been deployed in and around the town and four Indian Police Service (IPS) officers have been sent from Jaipur.
The violence erupted on Saturday, when the participants in a motorcycle rally, taken out as a part of a religious procession, stopped before a place of worship and started raising provocative and communal slogans. Miscreants from the other side allegedly hurled stones on the rally, in which several persons were injured.
