Brian McGinty insists Cumnock can become heroes to a generation by lifting the Junior Cup tomorrow night.
‘Nock go in as strong favourites to beat First Division Rutherglen Glencairn at Broadwood.
But McGinty is adamant his side will take nothing for granted as they bid to lift the trophy for only the third time in their history.
He told the Ayrshire Post: “This club has been in the final only four times in more than 100 years. That tells you everything about how big this occasion is to the supporters.
“It’s a chance for our lads to go and do something generational.
“We’re taking something like 20 supporters’ buses up there and the level of backing we’re getting is immense.
“It’s up to us to go and deliver on that now and we’re in no doubt about the importance of what this means to everyone.
“I suppose it’s brought into focus by the achievements of our near neighbours along the road – we all know what they’ve done in this competition down the years and now it’s our turn to go and make some history.”
Cumnock last lifted the cup in 1989 – a fact not lost on McGinty and his team, as they bid to spark the mother of all parties in the town.
He said: “Big teams win things and that’s the mentality we want to install at this club. We said when we came in that we have no magic wand but we want these days to become a regular occurrence.
“We know that if we play as we can, we will go and win the game. The pressure is on us to do that. Equally, if we fall at all short then Glencairn will be waiting for us to slip up and we can’t allow that to happen.
“We’ve got a good blend of youth and experience in the squad and hopefully that comes to the fore on what will be a huge night.
“Everyone has had their say on the game being played where it is on a Friday night, but come kick off all that will matter is the 90 minutes and us hopefully bringing that trophy back to Cumnock.”
The final kicks off at 7.35pm and will be broadcast live on BBC Alba.
