CS2 Ranking Systems explained: Everything you need to know about Competitive, Premier, and FACEIT

CS2 has multiple ranking systems, each measuring your skill and progression in its own way. From Silver I in Competitive to 30,000 in Premier and Level 10 FACEIT, each system has a set path to the top of the mountain. Understanding the systems, and how they relate to each other, is key to knowing where you stand as a CS2 player. Here’s everything you need to know about all the ranks in CS2.

What are the different CS2 Ranking Systems?

CS2 has three main competitive ranking systems: Competitive, Premier, and FACEIT. Each one is completely independent, your rank in one has no bearing on your rating in another.

  • Competitive: The original ranked mode inherited from CS:GO, using a tiered badge system ranging from Silver I to Global Elite
  • Premier: Valve’s newer flagship mode, replacing the badge system with a transparent numerical CS Rating from 0 to 30,000+
  • FACEIT: A third-party platform operating entirely outside Valve’s ecosystem, using an ELO-based ladder from Level 1 to Level 10

On top of those three, CS2 also features Profile Ranks starting from Private Rank 1, which feeds into the annual Service Medal reward.

CS2 Competitive Ranks: Silver, Gold, and the Road to Global Elite

Competitive is the original CS2 ranked mode, using a tiered skill group system inherited from CS:GO. There are 18 ranks in total, ranging from Silver I at the bottom to Global Elite at the top. The full rank order is:

Silver Silver I, Silver II, Silver III, Silver IV, Silver Elite, Silver Elite Master
Gold Nova Gold Nova I, Gold Nova II, Gold Nova III, Gold Nova Master
Master Guardian Master Guardian I, Master Guardian II, Master Guardian Elite, Distinguished Master Guardian
Elite Legendary Eagle, Legendary Eagle Master, Supreme Master First Class
Global Elite

While classically the Competitive ranking signaled your overall skill across all maps, the CS2 version of the system features separate ranks for each map in the Competitive map pool. So if you love queuing Dust2 around the clock, you can work toward the Global Elite rank on that map alone, without having to compete on a more tactical map like Overpass.

That quirk of the ranking also means that your (or your opponent’s) rank during a game doesn’t give a single unified picture of overall skill level. So if you’re getting destroyed by a DMG player on Nuke, maybe they are a one-map specialist, and you can flex your map pool over in the Premier queue instead.

CS2 Premier: How the CS Rating System Works

Premier is Valve’s flagship ranked mode in CS2, designed to give a single, transparent skill rating rather than a hidden MMR behind a badge. Your CS Rating gives a precise measure of your performance and consistency, with a number that starts at 0 after your placement matches. That rating can quickly climb into the tens of thousands for the best players in the world.

Unlike Competitive, Premier uses a map veto system where both teams ban and pick maps before the match. This makes the system far closer to a professional match experience than competitive games.

Your CS Rating goes up with wins and down with losses, with the magnitude of change influenced by the opponent’s rating and your individual performance. CS Ratings are grouped into color-coded tiers to give a rough sense of where you stand:

  • Grey: 0-4,999
  • Light Blue: 5,000-9,999
  • Blue: 10,000-14,999
  • Purple: 15,000-19,999
  • Pink: 20,000-24,999
  • Red: 25,000-29,999
  • Gold: 30,000+

The average CS2 Premier player sits roughly in the 10,000–15,000 range, with ratings above 25,000 putting you among the top tier of the playerbase. Premier ratings also reset partially at the start of each new CS2 season, requiring players to complete placement matches again.

FACEIT Levels and ELO: Path to Level 10

FACEIT is a third-party competitive platform that many players consider the gold standard for serious CS2 competition. The company was founded in 2012 and has been a staple of the Counter-Strike space for over a decade. The FACEIT system operates entirely outside of Valve’s matchmaking, using its own ELO-based ranking system with 10 levels, each corresponding to an ELO range:

  • Level 1: 1–500 ELO
  • Level 2: 501–750 ELO
  • Level 3: 751–900 ELO
  • Level 4: 901–1050 ELO
  • Level 5: 1051–1200 ELO
  • Level 6: 1201–1350 ELO
  • Level 7: 1351–1530 ELO
  • Level 8: 1531–1750 ELO
  • Level 9: 1751–2000 ELO
  • Level 10: 2001+ ELO

Unlike Valve’s matchmaking system, FACEIT runs on its own dedicated servers and its own anti-cheat client (FACEIT AC). The anti-cheat is widely considered more robust than VAC, though it does require a deeper level of system access. This makes matches feel cleaner and more competitive, which is why the platform is popular with experienced players and semi-professionals alike.

FACEIT Level 10 is the benchmark for truly elite amateur play. The very top of Level 10 feeds into FACEIT Pro League (FPL), the same circuit where many professional players compete in their downtime. Unlike Premier, FACEIT ELO doesn’t reset every season. Instead, players simply have to grind victories to make their way back up the rankings.

Profile Ranks and the CS2 Service Medal

Unlike all the competitive ranking systems highlighted above, Profile Ranks aren’t a measure of your in-game prowess. Instead, these measure the XP gained by playing any mode of Counter-Strike. Ranks run from Private Rank 1 to 40, after which you can reset your level to earn your annual Service Medal.

The Service Medal can be displayed on your game profile and has five different levels, with your medal getting upgraded after every reset you go through. The design changes every year, so players are incentivized to consistently play the game and complete the weekly XP challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the highest rank in CS2?

In Competitive, the highest rank is Global Elite. In Premier, there is no hard cap, with the best players often exceeding 30,000 CS Rating. On FACEIT, the highest level is Level 10, with the absolute top players competing in the invite-only FACEIT Pro League.

Is FACEIT harder than CS2 Premier?

Generally yes. FACEIT tends to be more competitive due to its stricter anti-cheat, more serious playerbase, and the fact that it attracts players who actively seek out a higher level of play. FACEIT Level 10 is widely considered harder to reach than a top-tier Premier CS Rating.

Do Competitive ranks affect Premier or FACEIT?

No. All three systems have completely independent rating calculations. Your Competitive rank has no bearing on your Premier Rating or your FACEIT ELO.
