What’s the latest team news?

Home boss Patrick Vieira will be without a number of players for the visit of the Gunners. Goalkeepers Jack Butland (wrist) and summer signing Sam Johnstone (thigh) are both out, while midfielders James McArthur (groin) and Michael Olise (ankle) are also not in contention.

Three summer signings - Malcolm Ebiowei, Cheick Doucoure and Chris Richards - will be keen to make their bows.

For opposition manager Mikel Arteta, there are doubts over four players - Kieran Tierney (knee), Takehiro Tomiyasu (thigh), Emile Smith Rowe (muscular) and summer signing Fabio Vieira (ankle). Arteta revealed on Thursday three of the above would training ahead of the clash with the Eagles, but did not specify who the one to miss out was.

What have the managers said?

Patrick Vieira : “We have a young squad with some young players. I believe it’s good to have that young talent, but they will need the support from the experienced players, and anything can happen.

“We’re looking forward to improving that side of the game. We need a little bit more experience. We have a couple of players who need support to take a little bit of that pressure off their shoulders to allow them to express themselves.

“The market is open. Anything can happen, players coming or leaving. We identify the profile of the players we want, and now people are working to try to make it happen.”

Mikel Arteta : "Three out of four of those are probably gonna be training this afternoon and if everything goes well hopefully they are going to be available for selection in the squad

“Hopefully they are going to recover because they have been missing a lot of minutes and time in preseason and they are really important players for us.”

  • Crystal Palace have won their opening top-flight league match in only five of their previous 22 seasons (D7 L10), although they have won two of their last four (D1 L1), beating Fulham in 2018-19 and Southampton in 2020-21.
