Crystal Palace hero issues verdict on Christian Benteke to Wolves transfer rumours

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison admits a transfer move to Wolverhampton Wanderers for Christian Benteke could be on the cards this summer.

With just one year left on his Palace contract, the Belgian striker has been linked with a move to Molineux. Bruno Lage is looking to strengthen his attacking options next season, especially after Fabio Silva’s exit to Anderlecht on a season-long loan.

Benteke has been touted as a possible target by The Sun after the Belgian fell down the pecking order at Selhurst Park behind Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard last term. In the last 16 Premier League games of the 2021/22 season, Benteke played less than 50 minutes of football and started only eleven times over the course of the entire campaign.

Morrison admits a Benteke move to Wolves could happen, especially with the World Cup in Qatar just a few months away. “It depends on what Christian Benteke wants to do because last season he didn't play as much as he would have probably hoped for,” Morrison told Online Betting Guide [OLBG].

“It was always Mateta who came in and did ever so well and then Edouard who was probably coming on before Benteke a lot of the time. If Wolves are offering Benteke a chance to play week in week out then it could be possible, but it'll be difficult with Jimenez. He might get more game time at Wolves, but it's one of those deals that you can see happening.

“I like Christian Benteke, I like him a lot and I speak to him when I go to the games, so I know what kind of character he is. But sometimes you get to that part of your career where you need to be playing regular football, especially in a World Cup year. He's been in around that Belgium squad so he needs to be playing every week and he'll have to decide whether he thinks he can get that game time at Crystal Palace.

“It'll come down to what Christian Benteke wants to do and what the club want to do, if they let him go then they definitely need to bring in another striker. That's something that could play out, there's still over a month left of the transfer window, so you'll have to watch that space. Personally, for me, if I'm Benteke then I want to be playing week in week out.”

Palace have not sold any players in the transfer window so far but have welcomed four players to the club’s first-team. Sam Johnstone was one of the first to walk through the door at Selhurst Park after completing a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion, with Palace also agreeing terms with Derby County youngster Malcolm Ebiowei on the same day.

The Eagles' biggest transfer of the summer came after a reported £21million deal was agreed for RC Lens defensive midfielder Cheick Doucoure. Last week, Palace completed an £8.5million deal for Bayern Munich centre-back Chris Richards.
