The upcoming "Ghost of Tsushima: Legends" anime adaptation, which will be coming from Crunchyroll, will not be anything like the video game it is based on, according to claims made by a new report.
'Ghost of Tsushima: Legends' Anime Adaptation Is Unlike Games
According to ComicBook Gaming, "Ghost of Tsushima: Legends" originally launched as a free update to the base PlayStation game in 2020, offering a separate cooperative multiplayer experience where players chose from four warrior archetypes: the Samurai, the Hunter, the Ronin, and the Assassin.
Rather than fighting human invaders like in the main game, "Legends" put players against supernatural enemies drawn from Japanese folklore.
The anime will center on three of those four archetypes, specifically the Assassin, the Hunter, and the Ronin, telling a story that stands apart from anything the single-player games have explored so far. The three characters received new illustrated visuals debuted at the Anime Expo 2026 panel, showing distinct designs for each warrior class.
The series will not follow Jin Sakai, the protagonist of "Ghost of Tsushima," nor Atsu, the lead of "Ghost of Yotei." Instead, the anime is based on "Ghost of Tsushima: Legends," the multiplayer mode, and features an entirely different cast of characters navigating a story steeped in Japanese mythology.

Crunchyroll shared the new character arts on its official X account, as part of their showcase during the Anime Expo 2026, which showed off early details behind the show.
The artwork shows the Assassin, Hunter, and Ronin in detailed illustrations that lean into the supernatural tone of the Legends mode rather than the grounded historical setting of the main "Ghost of Tsushima" campaign.
The creative team behind the adaptation brings a specific background to the project. Director Takanobu Mizuno is known for his work on "Star Wars: Visions," where he directed "The Duel," one of the anthology's most acclaimed segments.
The production studio handling the animation is Kamikaze Douga, which has previously worked on "Batman Ninja" and "Batman Ninja Vs. The Yakuza League." Based on Kamikaze Douga's past output, the "Legends" adaptation is expected to use CG animation as its primary style.
'Ghost of Tsushima: Legends' More Details Expected Soon
The adaptation was first announced in January 2025, making the Anime Expo 2026 reveal its first major public showcase since confirmation. No trailer or release date has been shared yet, but the arrival of official character visuals at a major industry event suggests a formal announcement is not far off.
"Ghost of Tsushima: Legends" is not the only game-to-anime adaptation Crunchyroll has in the pipeline. The streaming service is also preparing an adaptation of FromSoftware's "Sekiro: No Defeat," which is slated for release later this year and is expected to draw a similar audience of action and samurai enthusiasts.
The upcoming Crunchyroll adaptation of the PlayStation game, which does not follow the game's original story, is similar to Netflix and CD Projekt Red's "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," a show that saw appreciation for this decision and recently unveiled its Season 2.
