Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical, Six, Charlie Josephine on Cowbois - The Standard Theatre Podcast

Fans of the 90s, assemble... Up first this week we review Cruel Intentions: the 90s musical, which is based on the hit 1999 movie, which originally starred Reece Witherspoon, Ryan Philippe and Buffy's Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Cruel Intentions is an update of the much-adapted 18th-century novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, but with an added twist, updating the predatory, manipulative aristocrats to the Upper East Side of the Nineties and making them step-siblings.

Packed with numerous hits from the decade such as TLC's No Scrubs, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Just a Girl by No Doubt, Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls and Wannabe, this will have those of a certain vintage tapping their toes in delight. But is this show just a cyncial siren call to those nostalgic for the Nineties, or will everyone skip out of the theatre singing for joy?

We also revisit Six the musical in the week show celebrated its sixth birthday, with Nancy and Nick Clark heading to the Vaudeville theatre for a special Gala show.

Six is Tudor history unlike you've ever seen. It focuses on Henry VIII’s six wives, who come together as pop superstars to find out who had it worse off under the king.

The musical started with a student cast at the Edinburgh Fringe before being catapulted to the West End, with tours and Broadway not close behind.

Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, with direction from Lucy and Jamie Armitage, Six isn’t just a success on stage, it’s a social media powerhouse with thousands of streams of the album online, and is huge on TikTok.

For our interview this week, Nancy chatted with Charlie Josephine about writing and co-directing Cowbois at the Royal Court.

Charlie, who wrote I, Joan at the Globe in 2022, tells us about their love for westerns growing up and why putting plays about trans and queer narratives on stage is so important.

In news, Nick, Nick and Nancy discuss the National Theatre's 2024 summer season, the sad news for kids across the UK as Frozen the musical lets its West End run go, and there’s some exciting casting news for Slow Horses fans.
