Croydon incident: Riot police storm street as wanted man hurls furniture out window

Armed police are in a stand-off with a wanted man throwing furniture from a window above a busy street in Croydon, south London.

Members of the public have been evacuated from the area in the High Street as riot police stand ready.

Teams of around 11 officers have been seen in the street as a statement confirmed they are dealing with a wanted man.

Police have been in the area since around 8am.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers in Croydon are dealing with a wanted man.

"Officers were called at 08:10 on Wednesday, 1 June to High Street Croydon, near the junction with Katherine Street.

"A man who is suspected to be wanted by police was believed to be in a building at the location.

"Officers attended and a man threw items of furniture into the street.

"Local roads have been closed while police deal. LAS and LFB have been called as a precaution.

"Some members of the public have been evacuated from their flats to ensure their safety. No reports of any injuries."

Croydon's council has called on members of the public to avoid the area owing to the police incident.

They wrote on Twitter: "High Street, Croydon and Katharine Street are closed from the junction with Scarbrook Road to the junction with Fell Road, due to a police incident.

"Buses are on diversion. Please avoid the area if possible."

A hairdresser at nearby Toni and Guy, almost directly below the flat from which furniture was reportedly lobbed from, described how they haven't been allowed to leave all day.

She told My London: "I was so shocked. We have no idea what is going on and were just told to lock the doors and not let anyone in or out.

"We don't know what's going on and have been stuck in here since we arrived. We have had to cancel all our morning appointments and now it looks like the whole days.

"We have a big glass window and all we have seen through it is police- they haven't said anything just warned us to stay inside."
