London Fire Brigade tackle a house fire in Croydon - (LFB)

Sixty firefighters have been called to tackle a large house fire in Croydon.

Eight fire engines were dispatched to Addiscombe Road at around 4.30am this morning.

Half of the ground and first floors of a two-storey detached house are currently alight, the London Fire Brigade says.

It is unclear whether anyone has been injured.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

Addiscombe Road remains closed in both directions

Addiscombe Road remains closed in both directions between Outram Road and Fryston Avenue, according to live traffic tracker Inrix.

The London Fire Brigade has warned of disruption due to emergency operations.

Bus routes 119, 194, 198, 466 and SL5 are also being diverted as a result.

Locals report 'extremely pungent' smells coming from area

Local residents have reported ‘extremely pungent’ smells coming from Addiscombe Road this morning.

One person said: “I live six roads away and the smell is extremely pungent, praying for everyone involved.”

Another said the smell was “horrid”.

Update: Fire brought under control by London Fire Brigade

In a statement at 7.30am, Station Commander Tom Sharp, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control as quickly as possible.

"One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was used at the scene as a water tower to tackle flames from height externally. The Brigade's Drone Team was also deployed, providing the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the fire and using thermal imaging cameras to locate hot spots.

"Addiscombe Road was closed from the junction of Havelock Road and Birch Tree Way and we urged people to avoid the area where possible."

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area around Addiscombe Road this morning, as emergency services are on the scene dealing with a large house fire.

The blaze broke out at around 4.30am on Addiscombe Road.

Half of the ground and first floors of a two-storey, detached house are currently alight, alongside the whole of the roof, LFB says.
