Crown Prosecution Service twice failed to prosecute Mohamed al Fayed over sex abuse claims

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has revealed it failed to bring charges against Mohamed al Fayed for sexual abuse on two occasions.

Fayed, who died last year aged 94, was recently described as a "monster" by lawyers representing alleged victims.

Women accuse the former Harrods owner of rape and sexual assault, claiming he was "cherry-picking" staff for abuse in his executive suite.

The CPS confirmed it received evidence from the Met Police twice. The first was in 2009 over an alleged indecent assault on a 15-year-old girl in 2008 and the second in 2015, regarding a rape allegation from 2013.

Both cases were dropped due to "conflicting evidence" and lack of "realistic prospect of conviction".

The CPS also provided early investigative advice to police in 2018, 2021 and 2023, but received no full evidence.

A spokesperson for the CPS said: "To bring a prosecution the CPS must be confident there is a realistic prospect of conviction - in each instance, our prosecutors looked carefully at the evidence and concluded this wasn't the case."

It also emergedon Saturday that extra precautions were put in place to protect Fulham's women's football team from the club's late owner.

In a recent BBC documentary, 20 female ex-employees of Harrods said the billionaire, who died last year aged 94, sexually assaulted or raped them. Fayed owned Harrods from 1985 to 2010, and owned Fulham FC from 1997 to 2013.

The documentary revealed Fayed would tour the shop floor picking out attractive young female sales assistants to be called to his office.

Harrods previously said it was “utterly appalled” by the allegations of abuse and said it had set up a page on its website inviting former employees to come forward if they have allegations.

Mr Al Fayed bought Fulham in 1997 and under his ownership they rose to the top half of the Premier League in the early 2000s, peaking in qualification for the Europa League.

He sold the team in 2013.
