Crossfire viewers are losing their minds at the cliffhanger that ended first episode

BBC's latest drama, Crossfire, left viewers on the edge of their seats on Monday evening. The nail-biting series, starring Line of Duty actor Keeley Hawes, saw the first episode end with a cliffhanger.

Written by best-selling novelist and author of Apple Tree Yard, Louise Doughty, Crossfire follows a group of really close friends who go on holiday together and their world gets turned upside down when they are faced with a gunmen attack at their hotel.

Describing the drama, Louise said: "Crossfire is a drama about ordinary people caught up in an extraordinary situation and how they behave." Starring alongside Keeley is Lee Ingleby, Josette Simon, Daniel Ryan, Anneika Rose and Vikash Bhai. You can read more about the plot and how many episodes there are here.

In the final few minutes of the first episode, we see the character of Jo (Hawes), who is a police officer, try to save the staff and guests from the hotel. As she walks through the corridor of the hotel with a gun, she narrates "this ending was always waiting" and scenes of her life before the holiday is played out alongside scenes from the hotel.

Just as a young gunman is edging closer and closer to finding one of the hotel guests, she stops him and a stand-off between her and the gunman ensues. She tells him to "drop his weapon", but a few seconds later a shot is fired and the episode dramatically ends.

Many took to social media to share their praise of the first episode and its ending. On Twitter, user named Roper said: "Watching Crossfire on BBC, probs not the best thing to watch a week before I go on holiday". While Ali H said: "Best first episode I've seen in ages!"

Liya Waran tweeted: "Crossfire on the BBC is excellent. Can't figure out if my anxiety has spiked due to the coffee I've had or this episode." And Twitter user, LadyP, said: "I have already stopped breathing after watching the first ten minutes of Crossfire".

Viewers won't have to wait too long for the next episode however, as the three-part series will continue on Wednesday, September 21, while the final episode will be aired on Thursday, September 22.
