A man who was attacked by a crocodile in far north Queensland says he fought off the reptile by sticking his fingers in its eyes.
The attack happened in waters off Archer Point near Cooktown just before 1pm on Saturday.
The man, aged in his forties, was spearfishing when set upon by the reptile and suffered lacerations to his head, shoulder and leg.
“It has bitten him three times and dragged him to the bottom where he’s managed to, according to him, stick his fingers in the crocodile’s eyes multiple times and escape before swimming towards the shore,” Queensland Ambulance flight paramedic Valerie Noble told reporters.
The man was airlifted by helicopter to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.
