'Cristiano Ronaldo who?' - Fans troll former Manchester United star as Portugal replacement scores

Manchester United supporters have seen the funny side after watching Cristiano Ronaldo dropped to the Portugal bench as his replacement opened the scoring in their World Cup showdown with Switzerland.

Ronaldo, 37, is without a club after leaving Old Trafford for the second time in the aftermath of that explosive chat with Piers Morgan in which he slammed United, manager Erik ten Hag and several key figures past and present. As a result, the Premier League giants parted ways with the Portugal captain.

Despite underlining his goalscoring prowess in the group stages, Ronaldo found himself on thin ice, yet again, with Portugal manager Fernando Santos for his reaction to being substituted in their last game. Ronaldo was dropped by his country on Tuesday night when they locked horns with Switzerland for a place in the World Cup quarters.

It was an eye-catching decision from the Qatar hopefuls. However, that was soon justified as Benfica star Goncalo Ramos opened the scoring after replacing five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Ronaldo, in their starting line-up. He netted after 17 minutes at Lusail Iconic Stadium before Pepe made it 2-0 before the interval.

United playmaker Bruno Fernandes had a hand in that second by providing the assist. He was named in the side as Diogo Dalot also played at right-back, despite being overlooked for some previous matches.

While those two continue to fly the Old Trafford flag for their country, though, Ronaldo took centre stage - and not for the first time - as social media went into overdrive when Ramos hit the net. Here are a selection of comments as taken from those watching the action unfold on Twitter;
