Cristiano Ronaldo misses tonight's Liverpool vs Manchester United Premier League match at Anfield after the death of his newborn son.
Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez released a statement on Monday evening detailing the tragic news, in which they also revealed that their newborn daughter was giving them "strength to live" right now. "It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our baby boy," the statement, which was posted on Ronaldo's social media channels, read.
"It's the greatest pain any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you. Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez."
On Tuesday his club United confirmed that he would miss the game on Merseyside and that a fan-led minute’s applause will be held in the seventh minute of the game in a tribute to the Portuguese striker and his partner after their loss. Supporters from both clubs will unite to pay their condolences. Players on both teams will also wear black armbands.
In a message on social media on Monday night, Manchester United sent a message of consolation to the bereaved couple. It said: “Your pain is our pain, Cristiano. Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time.”
Tonight's opponents Liverpool also sent their best wishes. "All of us here at Liverpool FC send our deepest condolences to you, Georgina and the family," they wrote on Twitter.
