Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that his baby son has died while his partner has given birth to a baby girl. The couple, who had been expecting twins, announced in a social media post: "It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our baby boy. It's the greatest pain any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.
"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you. Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez."
The Portugal captain, 37, and partner Georgina Rodriguez announced in a social media post in October last year that they were expecting twins. Sharing images of two scans alongside a photo of themselves the couple announced: "Delighted to announce we are expecting twins. Our hearts are full of love - we can’t wait to meet you". The couple already have a daughter, four-year-old Alana, together, while their newborn daughter is the footballer's fifth child.
More than 117,000 people posted comments responding to the news following the former Real Madrid striker's Instagram announcement with teammates, sports stars, and celebrities expressing their condolences. The Manchester United Instagram account posted a message telling him: "Your pain is our pain. Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time." His teammates David De Gea and Diogo Dalot sent heart emojis while Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake responded: "So sorry my friend."
