Netflix has confirmed its 'creepy' horror flick The Platform is getting a sequel. Back in 2020, upon its release, it became the most popular Spanish film ever on the streaming service at the time.
Now, fans have rejoiced at the news of a second instalment, sparking debate around how a follow-up of the gruesome franchise will work. On Twitter, one user, Opheliasforest, wrote: "SCREAMINGG I HAVENT STOPPED THINKING ABOUT IT SINCE I WATCHED IT.
"I hope they don't just mess it up, they neeeed to keep it to the standards and s*** as the first one fr." LovelyZena added: "The first one stressed me out so bad but you know I’ll watch the sequel anyway."
The original instalment of The Platform, titled El Hoyo in Spanish, saw inmates in a vertical prison battle it out for food and survival. In the film, a slab of food descends floor by floor and, while inmates above eat heartily, those below are forced to eat their scraps - with gruesome consequences.
When The Platform was initially released on Netflix, viewers took to social media to describe their disgust, one user wrote: "The Platform on Netflix is so f***** first time I've actually felt sick watching a movie."
Another fan of the film, Ioncrushkita, tweeted: "The Platform has got to be one of the creepiest and most disturbing psychological horror films I've ever seen and I don't easily get bothered by a movie… if you love gore you should watch it."
The Platform 2 release date
An official release date for The Platform 2 is yet to be announced. However a recent post by Netflix may give away when fans can expect it to land on the streaming service.
Sharing stills from the sequel, Netflix gave us a glimpse into to the new film. When the streaming giant does this, post-production is typically finished and a release follows within six months.
The Platform 2 cast
It has been confirmed that Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is returning as director, while confirmed stars include starring Hovik Keuchkerian and Milena Smit. In the coming months, Netflix is expected to unveil more cast members, but don't expect many returning characters, as most met bloody ends.
The Platform 2 plot
Gaztelu-Urrutia says the original film's key message is that "humanity will have to move towards the fair distribution of wealth" and featured critiques of capitalism. Expect the coming sequel to contain similar themes, but with new characters leading plot development.
