Crash barrier to be installed on Paisley road amid concerns over speeding drivers

A crash barrier is set to be installed on a speed trap Paisley road after a motorist ploughed into a wall and drove off.

Renfrewshire Council has agreed to implement a number of measures on Park Road following concerns from residents about speeding drivers.

Shocking CCTV footage filmed last month shows one incident in which a driver crashes right into the wall of someone’s home before driving off without reporting it.

The homeowner was woken up early in the morning to the loud noise of someone crashing into the wall, but when they came out the driver was gone.

The wall was left completely wrecked, with the homeowner left footing the bill for the repairs.

This, and a number of similar incidents prompted councillor Kenny MacLaren to get involved and help tackle issues of careless drivers.

His efforts resulted in Renfrewshire Council agreeing to carry out a speed survey on the road, which Kenny claims is a hotspot for speeding drivers which is dangerous due to the bends in the road.

A crash barrier is also set to be installed in the coming months, with discussions also taking place regarding the installation of a speed table - a traffic calming device that raise the entire wheelbase of a vehicle to reduce its traffic speed.

Paisley Northwest councillor Kenny McLaren said: “There have been a number of issues on this road for a quite a while.

“A number of drivers go too fast and the bends in the road mean there is always a high risk of incidents occurring.

“My constituent stays in Park Road – next to one of the bends – and was awoken just before 7am last month by the noise of a car crashing into her boundary wall.

“The video footage shows a car skidding into the wall and damaging parts of it.

“The driver gets out, inspects the damage but then drives off without letting my constituents know what has happened.

“Unfortunately the car’s registration plate is not visible, so they then contacted me looking for any support I could give.”

He added: “Councillor Mags MacLaren was already dealing with another case just along the road – where a pedestrian crossing and mini-roundabout were installed a couple of years ago.

“There was a complaint about speeding and cars not stopping at the pedestrian crossing.

“Gerry Hannah, the council’s infrastructure, transportation and change manager met with us and the constituent to discuss the concerns regarding the road.

“It was agreed that the council would initiate a speed survey on this road to determine what further actions to take.

“There was talk of putting in a speed table at the pedestrian crossing and also installing a crash barrier at the corner of Park Road, where the car had crashed into my constituent’s wall.

“The barrier has now been ordered but installation is put on hold until my constituents get their wall repaired.

“Hopefully the speed survey can also determine just how bad the problem is at Park Road – residents have been complaining about regular speeding here – and will give officers time to develop some plans to tackle bad driving.”
