Crackdown on dangerous driving in Bridge of Weir as speed camera van pitches up

A crackdown on dangerous driving on a busy road in Bridge of Weir will begin this week – with a mobile speed camera van pitching up to monitor the area.

Residents have called for action on Kilmacolm Road – admitting they “live in fear” of the stretch – and made their concerns known at a meeting of Renfrewshire Council’s petitions board almost a year ago.

Plans for a van to be positioned on the road, referred to as “flexible deployment” by Safety Cameras Scotland, were agreed after a speed survey towards the end of last year found drivers were not sticking to the 30mph limit.

A specific location has now been identified and the clampdown is set to kick off during the week commencing Monday, June 19. The van is expected to park up and conduct enforcement at certain points of the day.

Alan Bowater, safety camera unit manager for the west, said: “The presence of the mobile enforcement van will help deter those drivers who refuse to reduce their speed through the village.

“We have already seen two serious injury collisions in the area involving vulnerable road users. This compounded with the high speeds justifies targeted enforcement in the area in order to support active travel and keep all road users safe.

“Those who refuse to reduce their speed will face a minimum three points on their licence and a £100 fine.”

A plea for action in the area frequented by children, GP surgery patients and care home residents was made last summer.

It came in the form of a petition, which was brought to the council and warned if the situation was not addressed urgently it was only a matter of time before someone was killed on the road.

Jan Fulton sounded an alarm on behalf of the community in August, saying: “I would say that the consensus now, as a community, is that we feel we are at a bit of a breaking point with it.

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that the people who live on Kilmacolm Road do live in fear of it.”

In December, she welcomed plans for the van as a “first step” to addressing speeding traffic in the area.
