Cozier-Duberry stars, unreal Nwaneri, Nelson woe: Winners and losers as Juventus beat Arsenal

Winners

Amario Cozier-Duberry

A certain standout for me was the young teenager. Amario Cozier-Duberry came off the bench and seamlessly joined in with the team on the left flank, replacing Fabio Vieira with Marquinhos swapping to the opposite flank.

The 17-year-old made direct runs at the Juventus defence and peppered the box with multiple crosses. Unfortunately, his efforts couldn’t be rewarded with a goal or assist but his performance will certainly live in the Arsenal memory and perhaps in Mikel Arteta’s ahead of the FA Cup clash with Oxford next month.

Fabio Vieira

Fabio Vieira has enjoyed three very good performances in the mid-season break. He chipped in with a goal and an assist against Lyon and fed Reiss Nelson for the goal against Milan.

Against Juve, Vieira was a go-to player for the team and was always involved in the attacks. He forced the best save from the opposition goalkeepers throughout the game and playing on the right flank has certainly given Arteta something to consider when rotating his squad.

Ethan Nwaneri

It is utterly impossible that Ethan Nwaneri can be only 15. To think he was 12 when the pandemic hit in 2020 is enough to make anyone feel old but seeing his performance when he joins the fray against players nearly double his age and still in their prime is unbelievable.

His confidence is clearly what has grabbed Arteta’s attention and choosing to play him again and again when other young players are available shows his confidence in the teenager. He had a couple of shots and good touches which will only build confidence in him.

Losers

Reiss Nelson

By far the biggest loser from the game was Reiss Nelson, who looked to have suffered a hamstring injury that forced him off in the first half. He started the game brightly and had a shot go close in the opening move of the fixture.

Being out could see him missing when Arsenal really cannot afford to lose further attacking options. The return of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka will of course be big, but this will certainly put more attention on the January transfer window.

Eddie Nketiah

Despite having a relatively good performance overall, Eddie Nketiah’s lack of a goal will again make him feel as though he has come off on the negative end of the game’s outcomes. With Gabriel Jesus out, Nketiah needs to show Arteta that he can indeed be the player that is relied upon to bring the goals for the club.

He did hit the post, but it was in a position that will be scrutinised for not seeing the ball hitting the back of the net or, at least, the target. He had other shots in the game blocked and will likely come away with added motivation to score at his next chance, which could be Boxing Day against West Ham United.
