The epic clash on Sunday between the 49ers and Cowboys could be a potential preview of this season’s NFC championship game.
Dallas’s dream of making its first Super Bowl appearance since 1996 has been derailed by San Francisco in the each of the previous two postseasons. As this year’s Cowboys (3–1) enters their game against the Niners (4–0), owner Jerry Jones believes the matchup will be a litmus test against the NFL’s “most likely” Super Bowl contender as things stand currently.
“They are, right now, probably the most likely team to go win the Super Bowl, but in order for them to get there, they have to go by us, hopefully two times if that’s the way it falls in the playoffs and we’re in the playoffs, of course,” Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan with Shan & RJ.

The Cowboys are coming off a dominant 38–3 victory against the Patriots on Sunday that included an offensive performance that saw Dak Prescott register 261 yards on 28-for-34 passes with one touchdown. Offensively, in conjunction with a commanding defensive presence, Dallas totaled 377 yards in the win.

Jones said Sunday’s outing against New England was the best he felt about the team’s offense this year. While one game does not define a season, Jones believes a Cowboys’ victory over the Niners would give the franchise a major boost of confidence entering a new month.
“You don’t need the game to tell you you’re playing the best, but you need the game to show you how you stack up against the best,” Jones said.
