Covid takes back seat; dengue, other virals return in Kolkata

KOLKATA: With Covid waning and life getting back to the 'old normal', doctors warn of a spurt in dengue cases this season. Lifting of restrictions and relaxation of health norms that had been strictly followed during the pandemic over the last two years make return of dengue a strong possibility, they warned. The city recorded its first dengue death of the season on Thursday.

Dengue cases swell in monsoon and it's time for patients to get tested for it, rather than Covid, if fever persists for 3-4 days, say doctors. Kolkata has seen scores of dengue deaths in 2012 and 2016 when it had turned an epidemic. Dengue cases were reported in Kolkata and Salt Lake in October last year but the number was small.
