As the BA.2 strain of Omicron continues to inflict Covid-19 on high numbers of people in Newcastle, Government data shows that the worst-affected age groups in the city are the middle-aged.
Those between 40 and 44 are the most likely to currently have the virus - while pensioners are currently among the least likely to be infected. As of March 20, those aged 85 to 89 in the city had the lowest case rate (272.1) per 100,000 people over a week.
This comes as the newest dominant Covid-19 variant continues to spread. BA.2 has driven an increase in Newcastle's case rate every day since March 3 - though experts including the city's Director of Public Health Prof Eugene Milne have spoken of how they hope this may only last for "the next couple of weeks".
