Covid NI: Five further deaths and over 3,000 positive cases recorded

Five further coronavirus related deaths have been recorded in Northern Ireland on Sunday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 3,072.

A further 3,059 positive cases of the virus have also been detected in NI in the past 24 hours.

On Saturday, five deaths and another 3,476 cases of the virus were confirmed.

The full dashboard is not set to be updated until Monday, January 24 but in a tweet, the Department said that 3,648,134 vaccines have been administered in total.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has revealed she has tested positive for Covid-19.

The SDLP deputy leader and North Belfast MLA took to social media on Sunday morning to confirm the news.

She tweeted: "I've tested positive for Covid-19 & am now in isolation. Not feeling too bad thanks to my vaccinations.

"I hope to move my legislation tomorrow remotely and continue my Ministerial duties as well as my MLA commitments for the people of North Belfast working remotely from home."

At its Executive meeting on Thursday, Stormont ministers agreed a swathe of relaxations of the restrictions.

From Friday rules on table service in pubs and restaurants were relaxed and the requirement to prove exemptions on wearing face masks was removed.

Pubs, restaurants or cinemas will no longer be legally required to request Covid certification for entry from January 26, although it will continue for nightclubs and indoor events with more than 500 people, as well as international travel.

Ministers are set to consider the remaining restrictions on February 10.
