A Covid booster vaccine could be offered to all adults by the end of the year.
The news comes as the Cabinet was briefed on plans should the number of coronavirus cases surge in Ireland in the coming weeks. Among the plans was offering an additional booster to all those adults who have not already had a second one.
Almost 10,000 additional booster doses are reported to have been issued one day last week, the most in one day since January. Yesterday there were 474 Covid-19 cases in Ireland's hospitals - a 45% increase within the last two weeks.

According to Virgin Media's Gavan Reilly, Ministers were told "an additional booster dose could be speedily offered to every eligible adult in Ireland by the end of the year". Other contingency plans include possible re-introduction of legislation for mandatory face masks in healthcare and on public transport.
Meanwhile, Tanáiste Leo Varadkar cast doubt on new restrictions coming into effect to fight Covid-19, although he admitted cases were on the rise. He encouraged people to consider wearing a mask while in more crowded public settings for personal safety.
