While there has been enough evidence about COVID-19 triggering and worsening neurodegenerative diseases, a recent case was highlighted by the American Journal of Case Report discovering a correlation between COVID and a fatal brain disorder. The case in discussion was about a man aged 62 admitted to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital Center, New York. The man was infected with COVID-19 when he was admitted and along with this, he had been undergoing progressive dementia, myoclonus, and difficulty walking. His neurological condition worsened and ultimately resulted in his death. The death was suspected due to Prion Disorder(PrD), a deadly brain disease, upon contracting COVID.
Despite extensive diagnosis of the man, including brain imaging, all results were unremarkable. However, the clinical suspicion persisted, leading to the ordering of CSF protein 14-3-3 testing for the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)- which belongs to a group of diseases known as prion disorders. It returned with a positive result.
