Covid in Bristol: Latest hospital admissions as four people battling on ventilators

There are 140 people being cared for in hospitals across Bristol after being diagnosed with Covid - and four people battling on ventilators.

University Hospitals Bristol, which runs the BRI, currently has 87 in-patients, while North Bristol Trust has 53. This figure has dropped from 170 reported on January 14.

Cases are also continuing to fall in Bristol, following the national trend, with fewer than 1,300 new cases confirmed yesterday (Monday, January 31).

A total of 1,261 new cases of Covid were confirmed in the Bristol region yesterday, bringing the total since the pandemic began to 293,882.

Fortunately, there were no new deaths in our region yesterday, leaving the total number of losses since the pandemic began standing at 1,749.

At a national level, 92,368 positive tests of coronavirus were registered in the past day, which brings the UK's covid rate to 1,036.4 per 100,000. A total of 51 deaths within 28 days of a positive test were also recorded.

New Covid cases have fallen by 5 per cent over the last seven days, and deaths have also fallen by 0.3 per cent over the same period.

Yesterday, new Covid rules came into force as the UK continues to ease restrictions. Limits had been introduced on care home visits under Plan B, but the three-visitor restriction was dropped yesterday in all care homes. Workers will have to take lateral flow tests before every shift from February 16.

Vulnerable five to 11-year-olds are also now eligible for their first jab to protect against Covid.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson continues to face the fallout from the Sue Gray "update" that found "serious failure" at the heart of government with regards to parties in Number 10 while Covid restrictions were in place. The embattled prime minister faced Tory MPs yesterday evening and took questions for over an hour, with his position remaining highly unstable.

Boris Johnson is in Ukraine today to show support for the country facing Russian aggression. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was meant to be accompanying him, but she is self-isolating at home after testing positive for Covid last night. She was in the House of Commons yesterday during the PartyGate statement and also joined Tory MPs in the evening.

The number of positive test results in each area of the Bristol region since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results recorded today in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 128,386 (+514)

  • North Somerset: 48,314 (+199)

  • South Gloucestershire: 72,048 (+374)

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 45,134 (+174)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 640 (-)

  • North Somerset: 400 (-)

  • South Gloucestershire: 424 (-)

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 285 (-)

Nationally a further 92,368 cases were recorded in the UK today, and another 51 people have died within 28 days of a positive test.
