COVID-19 saw elective surgery in Australia hit 10-year low, creating 'backlog of biblical proportions'

The number of people having elective surgery in Australia has dropped to a 10-year low, according to new figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The data shows that in 2021-22, there were 623,000 elective surgeries at public hospitals — the lowest level since 2010-11.
