MUMBAI: The state continued to report a drop in Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, though fatalities reported a jump of more than double from the previous day.
The state reported 6,107 new cases, the lowest in the 40 days since December 30 (5,368). The death count rose to 57 from 24 on Monday. With this, the total cases in the state touched 78.16 lakh and the toll reached 1,43,155.
The city reported a single Covid-19 death, a senior citizen with co-morbdities. It was the first death since January 2, when zero deaths were reported.
The daily Covid tally in Mumbai rose slightly on Tuesday (447) compared to the previous day (356), mainly due to a slight increase in the number of daily tests done. The daily test positivity rate remained steady around 1.3% on both the days.
“Hospitalisations, including to the ICUs, have dropped drastically,” said Kokilaben Ambani Hospital COO Dr Santosh Shetty.
For the second day in a row, the number of hospitalisations in the city due to Covid was below 100 compared to four times the number three weeks ago. BMC executive health officer Dr Mangala Gomare said the third wave has declined. “Only the tail is visible at the moment,” she said.
State officials said the government is looking at easing more restrictions in districts where the cases are low and also the rate of vaccination is high.
The active cases in the state dropped to below 1 lakh and below 5,000 in the city. The state has 96,000 Covid-19 patients under treatment, of which 4783 are in Mumbai.
