The Court of Justice has warned Songkran revellers they could face up to 10 years in prison and/or a hefty fine of 200,000 baht if found guilty of physically molesting someone during crowded water fights.

A spokesman said that during water fights celebrants should refrain from any physical contact except for applying powder on someone's face, and then only with their consent.

“Water fights and applying powder is alright, but must be done in an appropriate manner. For example, water fights must not become dangerous and consent must always be sought before applying powder on someone's face. Do not touch any other parts of their body because that could be a violation of the law,” he said.

He said groping of women or men amid the commotion is viewed as molestation and offences carry prison terms of up to 10 years and/or a fine of up to 200,000 baht.

Such behaviour against minors aged 13 years or less carries a maximum penalty of 15 years and fine of 300,000 baht.

Vocal harassment, improper gestures, staring and offensive online messages can also be defined as sexual harassment.
