Couples warned never to share a bed - 'it could be affecting your health'

A doctor has advised couples not to sleep next to each other in the same bed if they want to get a good night's sleep.

Getting a decent night's kip is of course crucial for a person's overall health and well-being, and a lack of it can take a serious physical and psychological toll during your waking hours.

Dr Karan Rajan, who regularly shares helpful medical advice online, has warned that sharing a bed with your significant other could affect your sleep quality, and indeed your overall health, the Mirror reports.

if your partner snores or moves around too much while asleep, this will probably prevent you from entering REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, aka the deepest stage of a person's sleep cycle.

In an eye-opening video shared with his 4.8 million TikTok followers, Dr Rajan, who works as a surgeon and lecturer at the University of Sunderland, explained that not everybody will have the same type of sleep cycle.

This could well mean one partner ends up chronically sleep-deprived, while the other is perfectly well-rested. Body temperature is also an issue here, as sharing a bed with someone naturally raises body heat, which could in turn lead to insufficient sleep.

Dr Karan explained: "One of the triggers you need to be able to fall asleep, is the drop in core body temperature. Sharing a bed increases body heat so it'll take longer for you to fall asleep."

Followers were left somewhat divided on this topic, with some finding it difficult to imagine drifting off without their significant other at their side.

One person admitted they "like cuddles" too much to give this a go, while another person joked, "Tell that to my spoilt, over-indulged Yorkshire Terrier."

Others swore by this surprising hack, however, with a third person commenting: "My husband and I have totally different sleep schedules and styles, we have slept separately for eight years, love it!"

A fourth approving individual testified: "Post-divorce. THE BEST sleep of my life!"
