A couple are believed to have walked out of the first UK performance of a touring musical about Cher - because they thought they'd booked tickets to see the actual singer. One of the stars of the show, which tells the tale of Cher's rise to fame, has shared the story on social media.
The musical, called The Cher Show, opened on Broadway in 2018 and was a hit with audiences in America. It has now had a revamp for the UK, with a lengthy tour lined up extending into 2023.
Cast members have been busy with promotion, giving an interview and a taster of the show on This Morning. But this activity appears to have been missed by two theatregoers who went to the opening night at the Sunderland Empire on Tuesday (April 26), ChronicleLive reports.
Three West End actors play differently-named versions of Cher in the musical, in order to represent the different stages of her career. Millie O’Connell plays Babe, Danielle Steers appears as Lady while Debbie Kurup is the 'ultimate diva', Star.
Steers took to Twitter on Wednesday morning (April 27) with the amusing story of the couple's mix-up. The actress posted: "Still thinking about the couple that left in the interval last night because they thought they’d booked tickets to see actual Cher!"
A spokesperson for the Empire said they could not "confirm or deny" the walkout happened. The Cher Show is directed by former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips, choreographed by ex-Strictly professional dancer Oti Mabuse and written by Rick Elise, who co-wrote Jersey Boys.
The Cher Show's website says: "The Cher Show tells the incredible story of Cher’s meteoric rise to fame, flying in the face of convention at every turn. This huge new production features a fresh take on her show-stopping costumes which earned her the title of 'the ruler of outré reinvention'.
"In a dazzling glitter fest sparkling with Cher’s signature wit and style, you’ll be spinning in the aisles to the sounds of her biggest hits, including If I Could Turn Back Time, Strong Enough, Gypsies Tramps and Thieves, The Shoop Shoop Song, I Got You Babe, and Believe."
