Couple’s wait on stairs in Greater Noida: Over 100 hit streets in protest

GREATER NOIDA: Rakhi Gupta (55) was rushed to a private hospital on Tuesday night as she collapsed due to low blood pressure while waiting on the stairs outside their flat in a Greater Noida housing society along with her elderly husband.

It’s been six days now for both Rakhi and Sunil Gupta as the tenant has refused to vacate their apartment although the rent agreement expired a month ago.

Meanwhile, over 100 residents of Shri Radha Sky Garden Society in Sector 16B held a candle march protest at Ek Murti Chowk on Tuesday. Residents said they would continue protesting till the couple — who arrived from Mumbai on July 19, hoping to spend the retired lives in their apartment — get their home back.

“Around 7pm on Tuesday, I was feeling very low and had to be taken to a hospital. While I was in the hospital, the society residents took out a candle light march to support us. After discharge from the hospital at 10 pm, I met everyone who was part of the protest,” Rakhi told TOI on Wednesday.

Ashutosh Srivastava, a society resident who was part of the protest march, said, “It is very disheartening to see the couple spending their nights outside their flat. We will continue with our protest till the time they get their flat back”.

While police have refused to interfere in this matter without a court order, Vishal Gautam, a lawyer, said, “In this situation, usually a legal notice has to be sent to the tenant for eviction of the said property within 15 days. Only after that, a civil suit can be filed for eviction in a court of law.”

Priya Gupta, the couple’s daughter, said, “My parents and I are very distressed.”
