Couple's Vegas wedding cancelled after groom told he would've died in three weeks had he not visited doctors

Rhys Chambers and Mollie White had planned their dream wedding. The couple, who have been together for five years, were jetting off to Vegas to tie the knot.

But they were forced to cancel their nuptials after groom Rhys, 29, got a devastating diagnosis. He was told he would have been dead in three weeks if he had not visited the doctors.

Rhys, 29, found some bruises on his arm and went to see his GP. He was quickly taken to Diana Princess of Wales Hospital with suspected sepsis.

But on Wednesday, January, 18 Rhys was given the shocking diagnosis of acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia, a rare form of cancer where the blood cells don’t fully mature before leaving the bone marrow, becoming cancerous. Rhys is now awaiting treatment.

Sadly the couple lost thousands of pounds after cancelling the wedding. Their loved ones are now trying to raise money to give them the wedding that they deserve. Mollie's sister Lucy has organised a sponsored walk from the Humber Bridge to Castle Hill and is hoping to get as many people involved as possible.

Speaking to Grimsby Live, she said: "Mollie sent me some pictures of Rhys' arms with some bruises on them about a week before the diagnosis and told me he was going to the doctors after he'd finished work to have them looked at. Immediately, the doctors said he needed to ring 999 and they thought it could be meningitis.

"When he got to the hospital, they measured the level of platelets in his blood. Normally they would be around 120,000 to 140,000, but Rhys' were at 12. It was at that point they thought he might have anaemia or leukaemia. We're just glad he went when he did because the doctors said if he hadn't then he would have been dead in three weeks."

Lucy said: "They would do anything for one another and we just want to make sure they get the wedding they deserve, we're hoping to raise as much as we can for them, but also to make people more aware of this type of cancer. People always say 'it'll never be me', but it was this time and you never know when it could be you." The family are urging anyone with similar symptoms to go to the doctors and get checked out to prevent this from happening to them.

Those doing the walk will be starting at the Humber Bridge, walking towards Castle Hill with some starting at Rhys' house in Grimsby. To donate to the fundraiser, click here.
