The Barbican Estate was hailed a "city within a city" when it first opened its doors to residents in 1959.
The site was branded as a utopia for hard-working, middle-class Londoners, with everything they could possibly need - a cinema, tennis courts, an arts centre, bars and schools, MyLondon reports.
