Couple have to ditch £5k honeymoon after bride slips on ice cube and broke foot

A newlywed couple have opened up about their wedding nightmare as they had to abandon their dream £5,000 honeymoon when the bride broke her foot during their big day.

While dancing the night away at their wedding reception, the bride drastically ended up slipping on an ice cube and fractured her foot.

Daisy Allen, 24, of Somerset, and her husband Tom Allen, 31, had to ditch their stateside honeymoon which they'd planned to follow with a Caribbean cruise.

The pair have since tried to get some of their money back and the insurance company are currently working on their claim.

Daisy said: "One minute I was dancing, and the next I was on the floor. When I couldn't stand up, I knew I'd really hurt myself. And it became clear we'd be testing the 'in sickness and in health' part of our marriage very early!"

The happy couple tied the knot at Berwick Lodge near Bristol where more than 100 people were invited to the reception which was topped off with a disco.

It wasn't just injury that tainted the day, as Daisy had an issue with her dress too.

Earlier in the day, Daisy had been taking pictures when she caught her dress in a bramble bush which left a small hole in the garment.

"I knew I'd damaged my dress outside but I wasn't bothered - I was having a great time," said Daisy.

"It was about 7pm when I was dancing with friends and someone had broken a glass. I slipped on the ice cubes, and my left foot got trapped in the hole in my dress. At first I was laughing, but when I tried to stand up, I couldn't - and that's when I realised I'd hurt myself quite badly.

"I was carried upstairs to my hotel room by my best friend and bridesmaid, and my husband came and looked after me. Sadly, that was the end of our wedding night."

The following morning, husband Tom took her to hospital where X-Rays showed she suffered a Lisfranc fracture - a rare fracture damaging the metatarsal and ligaments.

Daisy said: "Basically, from where I fell, I broke my metatarsal, and damaged the ligaments that support the middle of the foot. I'm in plaster cast, and, if it doesn't get better, I'll need surgery. We were supposed to be jetting off to Miami for two nights, followed by a week long cruise around the Caribbean.

"We had all sorts of fun stuff booked like basketball matches and speedboat trips, but instead, I'm bedbound. The honeymoon cost us just under £5,000, but thankfully we've been able to get the money back from the hotel in Miami. The insurance company is currently dealing with our claim, so we hope to get the money back for the flights and cruise too.

"All in all it's been a bit of a disaster, but we're hoping to rebook for September - I guess it's just one of those things!"
